SARS rejects reports of crashed e-filing site

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has rejected reports their e-filing site crashed under the pressure of large amounts of people submitting their tax returns online.

“Activity by taxpayers and tax practitioners on the e-filing site continues to reach new levels – [on July 2] more than 320,000 logins onto the site was recorded with more than 300,000 recorded on Monday. The highest number of logins per day during 2012 was 266,000,” said SARS in a statement.

SARS said it has acknowledged intermittent problems with e-filing affecting public access to the site since Monday.

On June 2 “SARS had received a number of complaints and enquiries from the media suggesting that the e-filing website had ‘crashed’ or that it had ‘gone down’. These claims are untrue and alarmist,” said SARS.

Furthermore, SARS said the e-filing website is monitored constantly and it is working with service providers to resolve the problems causing limitations or delays.

“SARS regrets the inconvenience caused to some taxpayers over the last 48 hours… Any notion that e-filing has ‘crashed’ must be rejected,” the service said.
