South Africa’s Right2Know campaign will hold its latest protest against mobile airtime and data charges in Sandton, Johannesburg, tomorrow (Saturday).
HumanIPO reported in June on the group’s march on the streets in Cape Town where they lobbied outside the MTN and Vodacom offices.
In tomorrow’s march it is the turn of Cell C and the Independent Communications of South Africa (ICASA) to feel the wrath of an expected 500 protesters.
Bongani Xezwi, Right2Know’s Gauteng coordinator, told HumanIPO: “What we are hoping to achieve is to make the mobile networks aware of how difficult they make it for us to communicate.”
The campaign group believes the high cost of communication, such as airtime, SMS and data, is limiting South Africa’s democratising potential because it hinders access to information.
Xezwi added: “In South Africa we have good infrastructure to be able to provide communication. They could provide cheaper data and SMS.”
