The Lagos state Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), regulators of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, will today commence e-ticketing payments on the popular buses.

The move, according to the managing director (MD) of LAMATA Dr Dayo Mobereola, is part of steps being taken to restructure BRT’s operations.

The introduction of e-ticketing he said would greatly enhance BRT’s effectiveness and usher in a holistic plan to make the operations of BRT more efficient and greatly improve passengers’ experience.

He said the introduction of e-ticketing shows the government is aware of the challenges commuters on BRT buses have often faced since it was first launched in 2008. But he said plans are underway to tackle the challenges, ensure efficient and effective service delivery, and increase the transport system’s capacity.

Explaining the advantages of the e-ticketing payment system, he said commuters would be able to pay using Lagos Connect, a payment card that offers numerous options.

He said: “With the e-payment system, Lagos Connect, commuters in Lagos will pay as low as NGN20 per trip instead of NGN70. They would not need to struggle for change or lose their money, and the system is safe and convenient.”

HumanIPO can confirm that many BRT buses have been equipped with card readers.
