Worldwide shipments of PCs dropped 10.9 per cent in the second quarter of 2013 compared to the same period last year, continuing the downward trend.
The fall is the fifth consecutive quarterly and marks the longest decline in the market’s history, according to the latest Gartner PC Vendor results.
Every region’s market declined, including the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, which fell 16.8 per cent and was the second consecutive quarter in which the decline was double figures. 21.3 million units were shipped in the region during the second quarter.
Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, said: “In emerging markets, inexpensive tablets have become the first computing device for many people, who at best are deferring the purchase of a PC. This is also accounting for the collapse of the mini notebook market.”
Lenovo has now grabbed the top vendor spot with a 16.7 per cent market share, overtaking HP which now has a 16.3 per cent market share.
Dell is in third position with 11.8 per cent market share.
