Great Rift Valley ICT Summit set for next week in Tanzania

The two-day Great Rift Valley ICT Summit will be held next week in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, allowing ministers in the sector in East Africa to meet to deliberate on various issues including ICT infrastructure and cyber security.

Dignitaries expected include communication ministers from Burundi, Malawi, Mozambique, South Sudan, Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Djibouti, as well as the AU commissioner of infrastructure and energy Dr Elham Mahmoud.

From the private sector presentations are expected from Wananchi Online, WOICC, the GSM Association and Gilat Satcom.

Topics that have been featured in the programme include policy, regulation, capacity building and applications, development of ICT infrastructure, balancing freedom and security on the internet in East Africa and the legal aspects of cyber security.

The summit has been held every year since 2006 when then UN secretary general Kofi Annan approved the launch of a global alliance for information and communication technologies and development.

He called for the involvement of governments, businesses, civil society and international organisations involved in ICT as a way of furthering the Millennium Development Goals.
