Kenya’s national broadband policy to be launched this week

The Ministry of Information Communication and Technology will this week unveil the national broadband policy that it hopes will help make Kenya a knowledge-based economy by the government target of 2017.

According to ICT minister Fred Matiangi the document will be unveiled next week and will detail how the government will achieve its 5Mbps internet connection per home and business vision and help the country’s social economic climate.

According to the document access to broadband for all citizens will lead to economic growth, job creation, growth of investment opportunities, access to online government services, improvements to education and training services and improved national safety and security services.

The strategy focuses on direct impact, its implementation and success including infrastructure (connectivity and devices), content (applications and innovations), capacity (building and awareness), policy (legal and regulatory environment), financing and investment.

Above all the strategy will also enable an environment to allow optimum market growth of broadband services including attracting the public and private sector investment and competition.

The strategy further provides for the promotion of public and private partnerships so that industry for stakeholder and the national and county governments deploy infrastructure, invest, and build awareness and capacity for use of broadband.
