Omobola Johnson, Nigeria’s communication technology minister, has announced her department will soon embark on a nationwide digital awareness campaign in a bid to increase the number of Nigerians online.

The West African country’s internet penetration is currently at around 36 per cent and the goal of the campaign is to ensure that two-third of Nigerians are active online.

Johnson was speaking during a keynote address at the one year anniversary of Jumia, Nigeria’s largest online store, on Friday.

Concerning e-commerce, the minister said her ministry is partnering with relevant bodies including the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to improve the perception of Nigerians online.

Johnson added her ministry is committed towards expanding the target market for e-commerce in Nigeria by encouraging foreign buyers to purchase local products on Nigeria-based e-commerce platforms such as Jumia.
