Microsoft wants the US government to allow it to inform its customers how it provided data to the National Security Agency (NSA), after claiming its role was misrepresented in the press.
HumanIPO reported earlier this week further revelations in the Guardian showed Microsoft had been complicit in working with the NSA to monitor users’ data usage and communications.
Microsoft has since written to US attorney general Eric Holder, pleading with him to “personally take action” to allow them and other internet companies to publish how they handle national security requests.
“We believe the US constitution guarantees our freedom to share more information with the public, yet the government is stopping us,” Microsoft said in a blog post.
“For example, government lawyers have yet to respond to the petition we filed in court on June 19, seeking permission to publish the volume of national security requests we have received. We hope the attorney general can step in to change this situation.”
The blog post also said there were “significant inaccuracies in the interpretations of leaked government documents reported in the media last week”.
