Kenya’s taxman to launch mobile payment, rolls out ETR tracking via e-system

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has began a major drive to bring small businesses and consumers into the tax bracket through the implementation of remote transmissions of Electronic Tax Registers (ETRs), aiming to be completed by December this year.

The remote transmission will enable confinement of data to execute a customer loyalty programme and enable effective monitoring of ETRs to track usage, detachment and locality.

John Njiraini, KRA commissioner general, revealed the recently launched iTax pilot has been completed and all modules have been started with a formal launch expected in early August and mandatory electronic filing implemented by September.

He also revealed the mobile payment system they have been considering is still being developed and he believes it will be rolled out at the end of July, reported Capital FM.

“Kenya must improve investment climate competitiveness through reform of tax processes,” Njiraini said

The commissioner was speaking when the Kenya Revenue Authority was announcing its annual year revenue collection report where KRA recorded a 13.2 per cent revenue growth of KSh93 billion (US$1 billion) compared to 11.4 per cent growth in the previous year.
