The ongoing Kenyan teachers strike over pay and the one laptop one child policy is reportedly pushing children through the doors of computer cafes, where they are attracted to PlayStations and other game consoles.
According to Capital FM, one video café in Zimmerman estate, Nairobi, has been collecting huge sums of money for the last four weeks.
Teachers and the government remain in negotiations and with all public schools closed pupils are spending their days camped inside at video game shops rather than revising for exams.
Cafe owner Albur Chomba said he had made a profit of Kh10,000 (US$115) since the teachers began their strike.
“Since the strike started I have made about KSh10,000. These children fill up my shop waiting for their turn because I only have three monitors,” he said, adding that the pupils take to his store every day from 9am and some remain there until he closes shop at around 8pm.
Chomba’s service goes at KSh10 for every 10 minutes.
