The British government has donated equipment which can detect a wide range of explosives, weapons and threats to enhance security at Kenya’s airports.
The new gadgets received by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) include explosive trace detector machines to enhance detection capability at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), standard test pieces for x-ray machines, walk-through metal detectors, handheld Metal Detectors and 200 x-ray trays for JKIA and Moi International Airports.
British High Commissioner to Kenya, Christian Turner, handed over the equipment to the KAA, Mutuma Mugambi, at JKIA.
Mugambi committed to engaging in partnerships that will tighten security measures at all Kenyan airports.
He said: “As a partner in the global airport systems one of our key objectives is to put in place reliable airport security and safety systems that meet the global standard. To this end we have in the past two years been implementing a heightened security regime, which focuses on an optimal mix of man and machine, to ensure a return on investment in airport development.”
Turner noted that the UK will also be delivering two walk through metal detectors for the new Terminal Four coming up at JKIA.
Turner added his government already has two experts in the country delivering mentoring and training to KAA security staff.
