Nigeria-born US-based writer and blogger, Myne Whitman, has decried the shortage of bloggers that post original content in Nigeria.
Speaking to HumanIPO, she said many Nigerian bloggers copy and paste posts without attributing or linking to the original which shows unpreofessionalism.
“I think a lot of [Nigerian] bloggers are trying their best, however, a large number of them only copy and paste from other blogs,” Whitman told HumanIPO.
She encouraged more bloggers to share their personal stories and experiences.
She said: “I wished that more of the bloggers took time to tell their own stories once in a while. There are only a few bloggers that do this. Adding their daily or weekly experiences and insights to their blogs will make their blogs remarkably richer.”
Whitman’s comments echo those made by Noble Igwe, founding partner of 360nob.com, who discussed the state of Nigerian blogging with HumanIPO in June.
Whitman said she sees writing as a means of getting stories out, reaching a larger audience and earning a living.
She said: “I think Nigerians and Africans do read a lot.
“I started writing as a teenager as a way to get the stories in my head out for others to share in. I started writing commercially more recently as a way to reach a larger audience while also making some money.”
Though based in US, she said she is connected to Nigeria and Africa through the internet, especially social media.
“The internet and social media has done half the job for me. I also travel to Nigeria whenever I can. I am inherently African and Nigerian in particular, so in my mind there is no divide or distance,” Whitman told HumanIPO.
