NCA fines Ghanaian operators GHS1 million over quality of service

Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) has slammed the country’s network operators by handing out GHS1 million (US$480,000) in fines for poor service quality.

Details of the sanctions showed MTN will pay GHS350,000 (US$168,000) for call congestion and falling short of the standard call set-up time obligation in the Greater Accra, Upper East, Upper West and Northern Regions.

NCA also directed Tigo to pay a fine of GHC250,000 (US$120,000) for violating call setup time obligation in Western and Greater Accra Region; the network also fall short of the authority’s call congestion obligation in Upper East, Upper West and Northern regions.

Other networks affected are Expressor which was ordered to pay GHC200,000 (US$96,000), Globacom was asked to pay GHC100,000 (US$48,000), while Airtel and Vodafone were asked to pay GHC50,000 (US$24,000) each.

The sanctions were the aftermath of investigations carried out by the regulatory agency.

The NCA assessed the quality of services offered by the networks using indicators such as call congestion rate, call set-up time (CST), call drop rate (CDR), and stand-alone dedicated control channel (SDCCH) congestion rate.
