LG has announced it is to start mass production of what it is calling the world’s first flexible OLED panel for smartphones, planning to release devices featuring the curved display next year.
HumanIPO reported last month Samsung was set to launch a smartphone with a curved display in October.
“LG Display is launching a new era of flexible displays for smartphones with its industry leading technology,” said Sang Deog, the company’s vice president and chief technology officer.
He said they wanted to take an early lead in the flexible display market by kicking off the sale of devices with the new display design and enhanced performance in the next year.
LG has applied film type encapsulation technology and attached the protecting film to the back of the panel making it bendable and unbreakable.
“The new display is vertically concave from top to bottom with a radius of 700mm opening up a world of design innovations in the smartphone market,” LG said.
“In addition, it is the slimmest among existing mobile device panels at 0.44mm thin and the lightest in the world weighing at 7.2g even with a 6 inch screen, the largest among current smartphone OLED displays.”
