South African digital tour guide creator Tourism Radio has released its Windows Phone app, providing location specific audio, images and travel information to individuals using the mobile operating system (OS).
The company recently expanded its services to Canada after experiencing success since launching in New Zealand.
The application has been in the pipeline since last year, with Tourism Radio and Microsoft South Africa partnering for its development.
“The Windows Phone platform continues to increase in size and popularity with mobile users across the world. Microsoft South Africa has been instrumental in helping us develop a travel app that we believe will soon set the standard on the Windows Phone platform,” said Hayden Braddock, Tourism Radio chief executive officer (CEO).
“After considerable planning and testing, we are now ready for the launch of our app.”
The Tourism Radio app is available to download for free from the Windows Phone Store, and the company said it is the first of many users can expect to be released for Windows smartphones.
The company said its will be rolling out Windows Phone versions of their application stable in the coming weeks, including other locations-aware apps.
“Windows Phone already connects smartphone users to all the virtual places where they are able to connect with the people that they care about such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. Now, thanks to the availability of the Tourism Radio City Guides app, users will also be able to discover new and interesting real world locations near their vicinity, which they can explore with their friends,” said Clifford de Wit, development platform lead at Microsoft South Africa.
HumanIPO reported earlier this year Tourism Radio had partnered with German travel app producer Yopegu to create mobile audio travel guides, providing hours of destination-based audio and on-screen content becoming available on the Yopegu mobile application.
