The DEMO Africa startup launchpad event has added 12 categories to this year’s edition – which will be held in Nigeria for the first time – in a bid to make it more inclusive and provide a wider and more level playing field.
HumanIPO reported in February DEMO Africa 2014 is to be held at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria, from September 22-26, the first time the startup event has been held away from Nairobi, Kenya, with applications are open until June 15.
The new categories are: Agriculture, Health, Education, Manufacturing, Retail, Media and Entertainment, Communication, Transport and Logistics, Energy, Finance and Banking, Water and Sanitation, and Waste Management and Recycling.
Executive producer Harry Hare said the new categories are more reflective of the needs in Africa and expressed optimism gaps will be better filled within the new fields.
“The new fields are reflective of the diverse African economy and we believe that the categories will enable startups playing in these fields to feel more represented,” he said.
