Cell C battles MTN with promo rates

South African mobile operator Cell C will be introducing four new promotional recharge vouchers on May 1, 2014, tripling the value of airtime purchased by a subscriber as it seeks to match price reductions made by rival MTN.

The promotion, called SUPACHARGE, is available in ZAR20 (US$1.88), ZAR30 (US$2.83), ZAR60 (US$5.66) and ZAR120 (US$11.32) denominations, and will run until July 31.

The announcement comes two weeks after competition operator MTN introduced a ZAR0.79 promotional flat rate in order to “stimulate the industry”, which it has subsequently madepermanent.

“Customers have been asking for more flexible prepaid vouchers that will allow them to spend their bonus value in the way that they choose. We have listened and believe the introduction of these four new vouchers, fills that gap,” said Cell C acting chief executive officer (CEO) Jose Dos Santos.

The bonus airtime can be used for Cell C-to-Cell C calls and SMSs as well as data.

“By offering a greater range of vouchers and linking bonus value to every voucher denomination regardless of the value of the voucher, Cell C removes the hassle of having to load multiple bundles in order to get the benefit. In addition, customers who choose to load higher value vouchers will enjoy the bonus value for a longer period (up to 30 days),” the operator said.
