MTN offers free Twitter access

South African mobile operator MTN has launched a number of mobile internet packages allowing subscribers to access Twitter for free through the MTN branded Opera Mini browser.

The offerings – which also contain free Wikipedia access – include Internet Explore for ZAR10 (US$0.95), Chat for ZAR15 (US$1.42), Social Networking for ZAR19 (US$1.80), Smartphone Lite for ZAR29 (US$2.75) and Smartphone Plus for ZAR39 (US$3.70).

“The services are designed to enable world-class chat, social and browsing experiences at an affordable price,” said Brian Gouldie, chief marketing officer (CMO) at MTN South Africa.

Each of the services are valid for one month for prepaid customers and one billing cycle for TopUp, MyMTNChoice and Contract customers.

“The solutions that MTN is bringing to the market today enable customers of any type and budget to make the most out of their feature-phone, smartphone or tablet. The focus is on getting the most out of the connected experience, and not worrying about bits and bytes. Connectivity is about staying in touch with family and friends, and conducting your business on the go,” Gouldie said.

MTN has recently reduced the cost of its voice offering, initially offering ZAR0.79 (US$0.07) per minute calls on a promotional basis, and later making them permanent.
