The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has been instructed by minister of communications Faith Muthambi to appoint a new chief executive officer (CEO) within the next three months.

Muthambi was addressing the media in Cape Town today about the department’s forthcoming plans.

HumanIPO reported in February SABC CEO Lulama Mokhobo resigned amidst allegations of being part of the pubic protectors investigation of the SABC for abuse of power and misadministration within the institution.

Since then Tian Olivier has stepped in as acting CEO.

According to the SABC Mokhobo’s reasons for leaving were “private and confidential”.

The minister has now said it is time for the public broadcaster to appoint another CEO.

“I have recently indicated to the SABC to ensure that we can appoint a chief executive officer within the next three months,” she said.

“All other entities will also be attended to and pronouncements in this regard will be done after consultation with their leadership. Although we are a shareholder ministry we are determined that the boards of directors must do their work without needing the minister to interfere into their operations.”

However, she said the ministry would step in wherever necessary so long as it is within the law.
