Cell C cuts prepaid call rates to 50c

South Africa’s third operator Cell C has announced it is cutting prepaid call rates to ZAR0.50 per minute for a promotional period, a move it said shows the company’s “commitment to providing the best value for customers”.

HumanIPO reported in May Cell C cut its prepaid and contract rates to ZAR0.66 from ZAR0.99, with the operator calling itself the customers’ “champion”, while rivals MTN and Vodacom both introduced ZAR0.79 per minute rates.

Cell C today announced rates are to be cut further to the ZAR0.50 rate, to be billed on a per second basis.

“We are exceptionally pleased to be able to continue to champion consumers’ right to affordable communication with the introduction of our new 50c per minute call tariff,” said Jose dos Santos, chief executive officer (CEO) of Cell C.

“It is really our way of thanking customers for taking up our offerings and a guarantee to them that we continue to fight for their best interests.

“This rate cut comes off the back of an overwhelming response we have had from customers to the original offering of 66c.

“It is clear that many consumers continue to look for a no frills, simple and transparent voice offering with an exceptional rate. That’s exactly what we are giving them with our new 50c call rate.”

The promotional rate will be available between July 25 and September 30, but Cell C said it may make the rate permanent depending on the outcome of a review currently taking place of the mobile termination rate (MTR) regulations.

Customers can change to the new tariff by dialling *147# or calling 141 from their Cell C phone.
