Global taxi app Uber launched its testing phase in Durban over the weekend, following recent launches in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
African artist DJ Tira is reported to have been one of the service’s first users in Durban.
“It is a city that is about movement and lifestyle,” the company said about Durban in a blogpost.
New Durbanite Uber users can get ZAR200 (US$20) off their first ride under the ‘Durban Launch’ promotion.
However, Uber warns lift-seekers it is still only available in a limited capacity while it builds up to the ultimate experience.
HumanIPO reported in August on Uber’s launch in Cape Town.
The competition in the taxi hailing sector is strong, with Snappcab launching in Johannesburg in August and Cape Town-based Zapacab going live in Nairobi earlier this month.
