WhatsApp messages hit 64bn in one day

Instant messaging (IM) platform WhatsApp announced over social media yesterday it has processed a record number of messages, topping 64 billion in a day.

“New daily record: 20B messages sent (inbound) and 44B messages received (outbound) by our users = 64B messages handled in just 24 hours,” the company said on Twitter.

The company has seen its traffic nearly treble in less than a year.

In June last year WhatsApp announced it had processed over 27 billion messages in a day, nine billion more than previously reported.

The company has recently been purchased by Facebook for US$16 billion.

“WhatsApp is on a path to connect one billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable,” said Facebook chief executive officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg.

The deal has received criticism from privacy organisations, saying Facebook will make use of WhatsApp users’ private data.

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum responded to the claims, saying: “There has also been a lot of inaccurate and careless information circulating about what our future partnership would mean for WhatsApp users’ data and privacy.”

HumanIPO reported in February instant messaging would account for 75 per cent of all mobile messaging traffic by 2018. However, it would only generate two per cent of total messaging revenue.
