Leading Kenyan operator Safaricom has welcomed a probe into the security communications tender awarded to the company after the Parliamentary Committee on Security and Administration suspended the project.

HumanIPO reported last week parliament has frozen the contract for the US$141 million security system awarded to Safaricom to supply a national surveillance and communications system until an enquiry into the deal’s legality is completed, after a number of members of parliament (MPs) questioned the deal.

In a press release, Safaricom chief executive officer (CEO), Bob Collymore assured the committee of the company’s cooperation during the probe.

“In the interests of transparency, Safaricom Limited welcomes the move by the Parliamentary Committee on Security and Administration to scrutinise the deal and we would therefore like to assure Parliament of our full cooperation during life of the probe,” said Collymore.
