Blackberry reports $5.9bn annual loss

Smartphone maker Blackberry has reported a net loss of US$5.9 billion for the last financial year.

However, losses for the last quarter – ending March 1 – were lower than expected at US$423 million, compared with US$4.4 billion in the previous quarter.

The company said it was pleased with its fourth quarter performance, and said that it was on “a path to returning to growth and profitability”.

Interim chief executive officer (CEO) John Chen said BlackBerry was moving to a “sounder financial footing”.

Chen took over from the departing Thorstein Heins late last year, and is in the process of implementing a turnaround strategy at the company, which has seen a number of executive appointments.
