MultiChoice, Africa’s leading pay-TV provider, will unveil new generation DStv decoders in Kenya ahead of the county’s migration to digital broadcasting slated for December 13.
According to MultiChoice, the new decoder, the DStv Explora, will provide DStv subscribers new features and functionalities.
“DStv’s new Explora decoder is bigger and better in almost every way. With a larger 2TB hard drive and an all-new operating system, the Explora makes the TV you love so much better,” said MultiChoice in a statement.
With 17 days remaining for the switch to the terrestrial platform, manufacturers, service providers and customers are in last minute push to realise the migration date.
The Ministry of ICT published a gazette notice in October confirming the switch-off of analogue television broadcasting confirming the December 13 date.
Explora’s hard drive provides increased capacity for video on demand services such as DStv Catch Up and BoxOffice.
The DStv Explora also features better content discovery with search results across an eight-day TV guide, playlist, DStv Catch Up and BoxOffice.
Subscribers can also search movies running and upcoming, live sport for the next 24 hours, as well as theme, keyword and advanced searches.
MultiChoice said modern and intuitive user interface are part of the new generation features in the DStv Explora.
“Explora features a DStv Central button from where to manage all activities, ability to find other airings of a specific movie or show, New remote control with dedicated shortcut buttons to DStv Central, BoxOffice, DStv Catch Up, Playlist, Search, TV and Options.” said the statement
HumanIPO reported earlier this month that the Kenyan government had again postponed the deadline in Nairobi, this time until June 2014, following a successful petition by the Media Owners Association (MOA).
Fred Matiangi, cabinet secretary for ICT, however said no conclusive decision had been reached despite earlier reports that indicated the date for the switch to the terrestrial platform had been moved.
HumanIPO also reported this month that the looming deadline has helped triple the sale of Samsung televisions which are inbuilt with DVB-T2 tuners hitting sales of up to KSh30 million (US$350,000) monthly.
